WHERE DID THE IDEA OF LOVED ONES’ CROSSWORDS COME FROM?
They started out as a tribute to close friends who were building a new home. I played around with the idea of making a flat stone of their first names in a crossword style to display on their front yard. She told me she had some "old gold", and could I make something for her and Loved Ones’ Crossword Pendants was born!
how long have you been making LOVED ONES CROSSWORD PENDANTs?
I have been making family crosswords for just over 10 years now. This project has been one of the biggest hits and most rewarding products of my jewellery career. Everyone’s crossword pendant is unique so that makes it fun and exciting for me as the jeweller, and it is very rare that I cannot configure names into a crossword format.
WHAT IS THE largesT LOVED ONES CROSSWORD PENDANT YOU’VE EVER MADE?
One loved ones’ crossword pendant included the names of seventeen different people!
what if I don’t want a pendant?
One client was very taken with her pendant and asked if I could do one for her husband not as a pendant, but as a ring. Due to her husband’s career as a rancher, he milked twelve cows daily, and bore a size 17 finger! This proved to be a wonderful platform to hold a pendant and we made his no problem. Following that, we also made two duplicate pendants for their daughters to celebrate their 18th birthdays. They saw their mom with hers everyday and that's what they wanted for that special occasion.
what other configurations have you done?
1) I did a configuration for a gentleman in celebration of their 10th Wedding Anniversary. Following the configuration, I gave him the estimate for his four name, 14K gold pendant. His reply was “Oh no, this needs to cost at least $10,000.00, can we do that?” We ended up circling the pendant with diamonds, problem solved!
2) For a couple celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary, their configuration created a space with two rectangular shapes in the centre. Rather than containing the 1.5 mm synthetic/genuine birthstone options (which is the norm), we filled the space with two princess cut birthstones!
What can i do with old gold that I have around the house?
We find that nearly everyone has “old gold” in their household, and this can be melted down and reused in a custom jewellery project. This is a great way to recycle materials from the Earth and adds meaning and new life to a piece of jewellery!
